    Description

ROYAL VIENNA PORCELAIN NUDE WOMAN PORTRAIT CABINET PLATE 100% HAND PAINTED
A gorgeous and fine Royal Vienna style 100% hand painted portrait cabinet plate.
The subject of the plate is “Parze” which loosely translates to “Fates” in English.
The subject is actually taken from an original oil painting “The Three Fates” by German artist Friedrich Paul Thumann (1834-1908), which depicts three women.
You can view the complete original painting on the web.
The painting on this plate is a very well executed portrait of a lovely young blond haired bare breasted woman.
She is well painted, nude from the waist up, wrapped in a pink cloth and in the process of carding wool.
The border on this plate is unusual, both in the color and the design used.
The colors in the border are pink and white and I don’t believe I have ever seen anther plate of this style done with pink on the border.
The gold trim is embellished with tiny gold and white beads, dots or jewels.
The gold work on this plate is fantastic.
There are actually five (5) miniature portraits featuring birds and animals incorporated into the border.
The plate is artist signed “Wagner” on the front in the area between the folds of the pink cloth.
The signature is partially covered with the gold decoration and a bit hard to see without a loupe – see the last photo for a close-up of this.
On the obverse the plate has an underglaze blue beehive mark, the hand painted number “34118”, the word “Parze” and some tiny illegible hand painted script.
Since the original Royal Vienna factory closed in 1864 dozens of firms produced their own versions of the decorating style originally produced by this factory in what the following book describes as the “post-1864 private enterprise” period.
My source for this information is the book
    Godden’s Guide To European Porcelain
by Geoffrey Godden from Chapter 5 entitled “
    Vienna and Vienna-styled Porcelains
    ”.
I want to be clear that this piece is not an original Royal Vienna factory piece but is decorated in a style similar to the original Royal Vienna factory as described in the previous paragraph.
As experienced collectors of Royal Vienna style porcelain we have come to realize over the years that the marks on the bottom of a piece (such as the “beehive” mark) and the artist signature do not define the piece but rather the style and quality of the decoration and the artistry.
A strikingly beautiful plate in pristine original condition!
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.
Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.
However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.
    Age and Condition
    Circa 1900.
It is in excellent to mint condition.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.
There are no chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines or repairs.
The plate rings like a bell when tapped on the edge!
I examined the plate thoroughly under a black-light and found no evidence of any damage or repairs.
The gold and the gold beading are in mint condition.
I see no noticeable wear anywhere and I do not see a single missing gold bead and just one missing white one.
The plate is really in exceptional condition for a100+ year old piece of hand decorated porcelain.
Please keep in mind the photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
    Approximate Dimensions
